Hammer or claw toes are often associated with the hollow foot. These are deformities corresponding to a raising of the toes. Therefore, these are often in conflict with the shoe and present redness, irritation or corns. These raised toes have obviously no longer their support functions. They are carried over to another area causing overload and hyperpressures characterized by calluses under the forefoot.
To limit the formation of corns on the hammer toes, it is important to apply regularly on the skin a keratolytic cream.
FALSE! The keratolytic cream destroys the horn: it therefore attacks the consequences but not the origin of the horns. If the toes are still soft, it is possible to extend them to limit their contact with the shoe. On the other hand, if their deformity is fixed, it is always possible to limit the conflict of the toes and the shoe thanks to a protection carried out based on a gel which distributes the pressures.
Some types of shoes favour claw/hammer toes.
TRUE! Too narrow or too small shoes as well as high heels are not recommended for people with hammer or claw toes. Prefer shoes with a wider toe box to make some room to your toes. More flexible shoes would better fit the foot shape and limit painful pressures.
At an advanced stage, claw or hammer toes are irreversible.
TRUE! At an early stage, the deformity of claw or hammer toes can be corrected (wearing adapted shoes, protections, foot care). However, at an advanced stage, pain and rubbing can be relieved but the deformity won’t disappear. In this case, surgery may be considered.
