What’s a corn on foot?
Under high pressures and excessive support on the toe, hard skin forms and progressively becomes a painful callosity; a corn on foot or a corn between toes.
Why does a corn on foot appear?
The formation of corns on foot is a defensive process of the skin. It happens in the foot but also in the hands or any body part subject to regular pressure or significant friction.
In the foot, corns often appear when there is a conflict between the shoe and toes. They especially develop when the toes are bent (hammer toes or claw toes) and the phalanx rubs against the shoe. A corn on foot can also appear between two overlapping toes. In this case, the corn is called a soft corn, that is to say a corn between toes.
How to treat a corn on foot or a corn between toes?
Ideally, to limit the formation of a corn on foot or a corn between toes, it is required to eliminate the source of pressure or friction responsible for skin overuse.
For a corn on a phalanx or at the extremity of a toe, opt for more comfortable and wider shoes to make room for the toes.
If it is not enough to relieve you, the undermentioned EPITACT® protections could improve your comfort.
The next step consists in removing dead skin or corn on foot by a chiropodist. By asking a health professional to take care of your feet, you would avoid hurting you unnecessarily and limit the risks of infection.
Lastly, it is necessary to moisturise and protect the area in the long term. To do so, the EPITACT® range of products includes protections made up of silicone gel.
How to treat a corn between toes?
If the corn is located between two toes, it is often referred to as a soft corn. For corns between toes, you can use the Digitops* or DIGITUBES®*. These silicone protections separate the affected toe from the others and limit pressures to favour the corn on foot disappearance. The friction between two toes is limited and hyperkeratosis progressively reduces.
How to treat a corn on top of toes?
If the corn is located on the top of a toe, the most appropriate solution is the DIGITUBES®*. This silicone toe protector is made up of a smooth fabric that provides more comfort and prolongs its lifetime. Several sized are available to correspond to each toe.
How to treat a corn on tip of toes?
If the corn is located at the extremity of a toe, choose a Digitop*. This small tube, made from silicone and fabric, has been specifically developed for this foot condition. Seamless and weldless, the areas of friction are reduced to a minimum.
How to treat claw or hammer toes?
If your toes are deformed and bent to look like a hammer or a claw, prefer the hammer toe cushions*. This device aims to comfortably extend your toes and avoids painful conflicts with the shoe. This silicone protection perfectly adapts to the space underneath the toes. It allows to better distribute pressures and relieves the toes. A flexible elastic to put on the third toe gives perfect holding of the device all day long.
In the end, you’d understand that the best treatment against corns on foot is prevention. By protecting the sensitive area, you reduce hyperkeratosis. However, if it’s too late, consult a podiatrist who will remove your corn on foot. After that, this area should be regularly moisturised with an appropriate cream and then protected with silicone devices for example.
